The First Bite

Six-year-old Annie stood beside billionaire Daniel Carter’s breakfast table, holding a glass of water with trembling hands.

“Someone is poisoning you,” she whispered.

Daniel froze. On his plate sat a slice of toast his fiancée, Victoria, had buttered herself. The kitchen smelled of coffee, warm bread, and morning sunlight. Everything looked perfect.

But Annie’s face was pale.

“I saw Miss Victoria last night,” the child said. “She crushed pills into the butter.”

Daniel wanted to laugh. Victoria was elegant, loving, and five weeks away from becoming his wife. She had come into his life after years of loneliness. She couldn’t be planning his death.

Then Victoria walked in.

Her smile was calm until she saw Annie. For one brief second, fear crossed her face.

Daniel noticed.

“Why is the cleaner’s child here?” Victoria asked.

Daniel lifted the plate. “You made this for me, didn’t you?”

“Of course,” she said.

“Then take the first bite.”

The kitchen fell silent.

Victoria laughed softly. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“One bite,” Daniel said.

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel pressed a button on his phone. “Security. Lock the doors. Nobody leaves.”

By noon, his doctor confirmed poison in the butter. By evening, his lawyer found changed insurance papers and secret financial documents in Victoria’s name.

The wedding was canceled. Victoria was arrested.

Before leaving, she looked at Annie and hissed, “You ruined everything.”

Daniel stepped in front of the child.

“No,” he said coldly. “She saved my life.”

The next morning, Annie and her mother were no longer treated like servants in Daniel’s house. He gave them protection, a new home, and a future.

And Daniel never forgot that the smallest voice in the room had been the only one brave enough to tell the truth.
