My Mother Humiliated My Daughter—Then Her Power Was Cut Off

When my nine-year-old daughter, Inès, won first prize in a regional science competition, I thought nothing could ruin her happiness.

I was wrong.

As she walked down from the stage holding her trophy, my mother, Monique, stood up and said loudly, “Your cousin Chloé should have won. The judges probably just felt sorry for you.”

The room fell silent.

Inès looked at me, fighting back tears. “Mom… am I not good enough?”

I held her tightly. “You are more than good enough, sweetheart.”

Then I looked at my mother and calmly reminded her of something she had apparently forgotten: for five years, I had secretly paid her electricity, home insurance, and part of her groceries because her pension was not enough.

Monique laughed.

“You would never dare stop helping me,” she said.

The next morning, I canceled every automatic payment from my bank account and transferred the bills fully into her name.

Seven days later, her electricity was cut off.

She called me repeatedly, crying and begging me to fix everything. I did not answer.

But that same evening, a registered letter arrived at her apartment.

It came from my late father’s former lawyer.

The letter revealed that before his death, my father had created a small savings account for Inès. My mother had temporarily controlled the money—and had secretly used part of it while pretending she had no financial support.

When the family discovered the truth, everything changed.

My brother demanded answers. Monique cried, blamed loneliness, and begged us not to “destroy the family.”

I looked at Inès, standing beside me with her trophy.

“You did that yourself,” I told my mother. “The moment you made a child feel worthless.”

The missing money was returned to Inès’s account. My mother’s bills remained in her own name.

And from that day forward, Inès never again asked me if she was good enough.
