The two little girls had been sitting alone for nearly forty minutes when Adrian Vale noticed them.
They looked about five years old, dressed in matching pink gowns and tiny silver tiaras—as if they had come straight from a wedding. One twin hugged a teddy bear. The other stared silently at the departure board above Gate 17.
Adrian was on his way to board a private flight when he stopped.
“Where are your parents?” he asked gently.
The girl with the teddy bear lowered her eyes.
“Our new mommy said to wait here.”
“And your father?”
The second twin whispered, “Daddy died.”
Adrian felt something tighten in his chest.
Behind him, his two security men exchanged uneasy looks. Adrian crouched so he was at eye level with the children.
“What’s your name?”
“I’m Lily. She’s Sophie.”
“And where is your new mommy?”
Lily pointed toward the runway.
“She said she had to get something.”
Adrian looked at the flight board. The plane at Gate 17 had already departed.
Airport security was called immediately. Within minutes, the truth became clear: the twins’ stepmother had boarded a flight to New York alone. Their small suitcase had been left near a trash bin. Their emergency contact card had been removed.
But one thing had been forgotten.
Inside the teddy bear’s tiny pocket was an old photograph.
Adrian froze when he saw it.
The man in the picture was his younger brother, Daniel—who had died six months earlier in a car accident after years of separation from the family.
These were not strangers.
They were Adrian’s nieces.
For years, Daniel had hidden the children from his powerful family after a bitter argument. Adrian had searched for him, but never found him in time.
Now his daughters were sitting abandoned beneath an airport sign.
Adrian looked at the twins, his voice trembling for the first time in years.
“Girls… my name is Adrian.”
Sophie squeezed her sister’s hand.
“Are you going to leave too?”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“No,” he said. “I think I’ve been looking for you longer than you know.”
Behind them, airport officers rushed toward the gate with urgent news: the stepmother’s plane had been stopped before its connecting flight.
But Adrian no longer looked at the runway.
He removed his expensive coat, wrapped it around both girls, and sat beside them.
That evening, the twins left the airport holding his hands.
And for the first time since losing their father, they were no longer waiting for someone to come back.
