The Teddy Bear on Maple Street

The evening had almost fallen when Emma heard the small voice near the brick wall.

A little girl stood alone with a teddy bear pressed to her chest. Her cheeks were wet, but she was trying hard not to cry.

“My mother said to wait,” the girl whispered. “But she didn’t come back.”

Emma’s heart tightened. Her boyfriend Daniel called the police, while Emma knelt beside the child and spoke softly, as if one loud word could break her.

The girl’s name was Lily. In her pocket was a crumpled paper with an address. It was only two streets away.

When they reached the house, the front door was open. An elderly woman rushed out, trembling. Lily ran into her arms.

It was her grandmother. She had fallen in the garden and couldn’t get back to the street.

That night, Lily gave Emma her teddy bear “for being brave.” Emma returned it with a smile.

“No,” she said. “He stayed with you when you were scared. That means he belongs to you.”

Years later, Emma still remembered that evening. Not because she had saved a child, but because one frightened little girl had reminded her that kindness can find someone even on the quietest street.
