The Boy in Seat 31B

The first scream came from first class.

Flight 782 was flying over the Atlantic when the lights flickered, the plane dropped, and oxygen masks fell from above. Grace Holloway, the lead flight attendant, ran to the cockpit and froze.

Both pilots were unconscious.

A strange chemical smell filled the cockpit. The plane was losing altitude. Grace grabbed the intercom.

“Is anyone on board able to fly?”

No one answered.

Then a small boy stood up from seat 31B.

“I can help,” he said.

His name was Malachi Brooks. He was twelve years old, wearing an old navy blazer and holding a worn aviation notebook.

A rich passenger from first class, Gerald Whitmore, blocked him.

“You’re a child,” he snapped. “Sit down.”

But Malachi pulled out a youth aviation certificate and a bronze pilot wing pin.

“My father was Captain Isaiah Brooks,” he said. “He saved Flight 411.”

Grace knew the name. Isaiah Brooks had died after saving one hundred eighty-one passengers during a storm landing.

The plane dropped again.

Grace looked at Gerald and said, “Move.”

Malachi climbed into the captain’s seat. His hands shook for one second, then became steady. He checked the altitude, speed, engines, and controls.

“Connect me to ground control,” he said.

The radio crackled.

“Flight 782, identify yourself.”

Malachi swallowed.

“This is Malachi Brooks. I’m twelve. Both pilots are down. I need help bringing two hundred people home.”

Ground control went silent.

Then a voice answered, “Brooks? Listen carefully. Your father reported the same chemical smell before Flight 411.”

Grace turned cold.

This was not an accident.

A controller told Malachi to check the cockpit ventilation. One switch had been changed. Someone had forced poisoned air into the cockpit.

Malachi looked at the glass reflection and saw Gerald backing away.

“Search his briefcase,” he whispered.

Passengers stopped Gerald before he could run. Inside, they found chemical capsules, a fake crew badge, and a small device.

Ground control guided Malachi step by step. The runway lights appeared through the clouds like a path home.

“Easy,” the controller said. “Your father would be proud.”

The landing was hard, but safe.

When the plane stopped, every passenger stood and applauded.

Police took Gerald away.

Malachi hugged his grandmother and whispered:

“Dad brought them home once. Today, we did it together.”
