The Last Ride of Mrs. Rose

Every Tuesday, at the same hour, Mrs. Rose took bus number 18 and sat by the window. She always wore her gray coat, carried her small black handbag, and kept an old folded ticket inside her pocket.

The other passengers thought she was going shopping. But Mrs. Rose had been taking the same route for twenty-seven years.

That afternoon, a young red-haired woman stepped onto the bus, holding a folder against her chest. Her name was Clara, and it was her first day working for a charity that helped elderly people reconnect with lost family members.

The bus was crowded, but Clara’s eyes stopped on Mrs. Rose. The older woman sat quietly by the window, her hands trembling around her handbag.

At the next stop, the bag slipped from her lap. Clara bent down to pick it up, and a small white card fell onto the floor. It was old, faded, and almost blank. Only one name could still be read:

“Elise.”

Mrs. Rose’s face turned pale.

“She was my daughter,” she whispered. “She was supposed to meet me at this stop… but she never came.”

Clara’s heart tightened. Slowly, she opened the folder in her arms.

“I think I know why I had to take this bus today.”

Inside was a letter found in the charity’s old records. It had been written by a woman named Elise before she died. In the letter, Elise asked someone to find her mother and tell her the truth: she had never abandoned her. She had been sick, alone, and too weak to return, but she had loved her mother until her final day.

Mrs. Rose read the letter without speaking. Then her tears fell onto the page.

“She didn’t forget me…”

Clara sat beside her and gently held her hand.

“No,” she said softly. “She loved you.”

When the bus reached the final stop, Mrs. Rose did not step off with the same pain in her heart. She held the letter close, looked at Clara, and smiled for the first time in years.

The next morning, she took bus number 18 again.

But this time, she was not going to wait for the past.

She was going to place flowers on her daughter’s grave, finally at peace.
