Camila needed a boyfriend by tomorrow.
Not because she wanted to impress anyone, but because her sick mother believed Camila was finally loved.
Alejandro Santillán, a wealthy hotel owner, heard her crying in his penthouse kitchen. Camila worked for him quietly, always respectful, always invisible. But that day, he heard the truth: her sister’s wedding was tomorrow, her family expected her to bring a man, and her mother might not live long enough to see another happy moment.
The next morning, Alejandro stood by the door in simple clothes.
“If I’m going to be your boyfriend today,” he said, “you can’t call me Mr. Santillán.”
Camila was shocked, but she was too tired to face her family alone.
At the wedding in Cholula, her mother hugged Alejandro with tears in her eyes.
“Thank you for coming with my daughter,” she whispered.
The lie hurt them both.
Camila’s father questioned Alejandro coldly, and the relatives whispered all day. But when someone asked what he saw in Camila, Alejandro forgot the story they had prepared.
“I see a woman who gives everything to others,” he said. “And still no one asks who protects her.”
Camila’s eyes filled with tears.
Later that evening, she told her mother the truth. There was no boyfriend. Alejandro was only her boss, and she had lied because she wanted to give her one peaceful day.
Her mother smiled weakly and held her hand.
“My child, love is not always a title. Sometimes it is the person who stands beside you when you are ashamed.”
Weeks later, Camila’s mother passed away peacefully.
Alejandro did not disappear. He helped Camila start a new life, not as her employer, and not as a lie.
And when he finally asked her to dinner, Camila smiled through tears.
“This time,” she said, “no pretending.”
Alejandro took her hand.
“No pretending.”
