My husband handed me divorce papers during our anniversary party.
Miles stood in front of our friends and family, smiling beside his mistress, Kendra, as if humiliating me was part of the celebration. She wore a bright red dress — and my late father’s diamond earrings.

Miles lifted the microphone. “Lena and I have been pretending for too long. Tonight, everyone deserves the truth.”
He gave me the envelope. Inside were divorce papers, already signed. He wanted the house, half my design studio, and the company I had saved with my inheritance.
Kendra touched his arm and whispered, “Play the video.”

She hurried to the media table and connected her phone to the big screen. Instead of a romantic video, her private messages appeared behind the cake.
Miles: Once Lena signs tonight, the studio transfer is clean.
Miles: Wear the earrings. I want her to know before she loses them.
Kendra: What about the money from her inheritance?
Miles: She’ll never prove it if she signs.
The ballroom went silent.
Miles turned pale. Kendra ripped the cable out, but it was too late.
I looked at the papers, then at him.
“You wanted witnesses,” I said. “Now you have them.”
The next morning, my lawyer froze Miles’s accounts. Within days, his hidden transfers were exposed. Kendra returned my father’s earrings through her attorney. His partners left him, and the house he planned to steal stayed in my name.
A week later, Miles came to my door.
“Lena, please. I made a mistake.”
I stood there wearing my father’s earrings.
“No, Miles,” I said. “You made a plan. It just failed.”
