At thirty, Serena had a successful career, her own home, and a life she loved. Yet her family treated her like a failure simply because she was unmarried.
Three days before the annual family barbecue, her mother ordered her to bring a boyfriend—or risk embarrassing everyone again. Humiliated and desperate, Serena made an impulsive decision: she asked Miles, a stranger she had accidentally spilled coffee on, to pretend to be her partner for one afternoon.
Miles arrived at the luxurious family estate in faded jeans, work boots, and a plain shirt. Serena’s sister Lois immediately laughed.
“So now your type is a smelly construction worker?”
The family joined in. Serena’s father barely shook Miles’s hand, while her mother warned Serena to keep him away from important guests.
Miles remained calm. When an uncle tried to embarrass him with questions about business and logistics, Miles gave such a knowledgeable answer that the man quickly walked away.
Lois, furious that Miles had impressed anyone, ordered him to cook at the grill as though he were hired help. Miles accepted without complaint.
Later, Lois gathered everyone and announced that she had been promoted to regional operations manager at Sterling Corporation. She displayed a business card and forced Serena to stand.
“Tell everyone how proud you are that at least one daughter became successful,” Lois said. “You’ll never achieve anything like this.”
Serena froze, fighting back tears.
Miles quietly took the glass from her trembling hand and turned toward Lois.
He asked her a basic question about regional inventory management. Lois could not answer.
Then Miles called Sterling’s human resources director on speakerphone.
The answer shocked everyone: Lois was not a regional manager. She was a data-entry clerk.
As relatives checked her online profile, Lois panicked and accused Miles of being an impostor Serena had hired.
Miles stood.
“My name is Miles Sterling,” he said. “My family founded Sterling Corporation. I’m the CEO.”
The patio fell silent.
Lois admitted she had invented the promotion because she wanted to remain the family’s most successful daughter.
Serena’s mother tried to defend her, but Miles asked one question no one could answer:
“When was the last time you told Serena you were proud of her?”
Serena finally faced her family.
“My life was never a failure. You only made me feel small so Lois could feel important.”
Then she left with Miles.
Outside the gates, Serena apologized for hiring him. Miles smiled and explained that he had never intended to accept her money.
“I came because you deserved someone beside you,” he said. “But I’d like our next date to be real.”
Serena agreed.
