Penelope Quinn had no idea who she was insulting when she walked through a path cleared by bodyguards, took the last truffle slider from the buffet, and calmly walked away.
The man watching her was Casian Romano, one of Manhattan’s most feared and powerful men.
When Casian ordered his security chief, Mateo, to bring Penelope to his private lounge, everyone expected her to obey.
She refused.
“If Mr. Romano wants to speak to me, he can walk over here himself,” she said.
Minutes later, the entire club fell silent as Casian personally crossed the room and sat opposite her.
“You ignored me,” he said.
“You were blocking the food.”
Casian stared at her, then unexpectedly laughed.
Penelope was unlike anyone surrounding him. She did not flatter him, fear him enough to obey, or pretend his reputation impressed her.
Their conversation was interrupted when Casian received an urgent message. One of his closest financial executives had disappeared—and confidential access to several Romano companies had been compromised.
Penelope assumed that was the end of their strange encounter.
She was wrong.
Before she could leave, Mateo escorted her to Casian’s private office.
Documents were scattered across the desk, and an open safe stood behind him.
Casian handed her a folder.
Penelope froze when she saw her own name on the first page.
According to the documents, temporary control of several of Casian’s legitimate companies would be transferred to an independent trustee if his organization suffered an internal betrayal.
That trustee was now Penelope.
“You met me tonight,” she said. “Why would you trust me?”
Casian looked directly into her eyes.
“Because everyone around me wants something—money, influence, protection.”
He paused.
“You wanted a sandwich.”
Penelope almost laughed, but Casian remained serious.
More importantly, she had been willing to tell him no when everyone else obeyed.
Over the following days, Penelope discovered why Casian had chosen her. His missing executive had been secretly transferring company assets with help from several trusted insiders. Penelope’s independence made her the only person outside their influence.
Working with Casian’s lawyers, she blocked the fraudulent transfers and preserved the legitimate businesses before millions disappeared.
The betrayal was exposed, the stolen money was recovered, and those responsible were removed from the companies.
When everything was finally over, Penelope returned the folder to Casian.
“You can have your empire back.”
Casian pushed it toward her again.
“Keep your position.”
“Why?”
A rare smile appeared on his face.
“Because apparently my empire needs at least one person who isn’t afraid to tell me I’m wrong.”
Penelope smiled.
Weeks earlier, she had entered the Aurelia Club believing powerful men would barely notice her.
Instead, by refusing to make herself smaller for one of them, she became the person he trusted most.
