Vivian Cross was minutes away from boarding her private jet for a two-billion-dollar business deal when an eight-year-old girl named Sophie stopped her at the airport.
“My dad and I are lost,” the child said.
Her father, Nolan Mercer, apologized and asked for directions to the bus terminal. They were traveling to a small Colorado town called Black Ridge.
Vivian froze.
Then Nolan mentioned the man they were going to visit: Elias Ward.
“Cancel my flight,” Vivian told her assistant.
Twenty-one years earlier, Elias had been an engineer for Vivian’s family company. He had disappeared after a bridge failure nearly destroyed the business, and Vivian had grown up hearing that he was responsible.
Nolan revealed that Elias was also his late wife Rachel’s father. Rachel had spent most of her life believing her father had abandoned her. Before dying, she had asked Nolan to discover the truth.

Elias had warned Cross Meridian executives that cheaper construction materials could cause a structural failure. Vivian’s grandfather ignored him. When the bridge later failed, the company blamed Elias and threatened him into silence.
He had disappeared not because he stopped loving Rachel, but because he believed staying away would protect her.
Vivian stared at the evidence, realizing her family had destroyed an innocent man’s reputation and separated a father from his daughter.
Sophie approached Elias and placed her stuffed red fox beside him.
“My mom never forgot you,” she whispered.
Within weeks, Vivian publicly cleared Elias’s name and compensated those affected by the old scandal. She also created a foundation honoring Rachel.
Nolan had traveled to Black Ridge searching for an answer.
Sophie found the grandfather her mother had always loved.
