At thirty, Serena had a career, her own apartment, and a life she was proud of. But none of it impressed her family because she was still single.
Three days before the annual family barbecue, her mother called with another humiliating demand.
“Bring someone this year. Your sister has built a respectable life. Stop embarrassing us.”
Minutes later, still shaken, Serena accidentally spilled coffee on a stranger named Miles. He wore faded jeans, work boots, and a simple shirt.
In a moment of desperation, she offered to pay him to pretend to be her boyfriend for one afternoon.
Miles surprisingly agreed.
The moment they arrived at her parents’ estate, Serena regretted everything.
Her successful older sister, Lois, looked Miles over and laughed.
“So now your type is a smelly construction worker?”
Relatives joined in. Serena’s mother privately complained that Miles looked like hired help, while her father barely acknowledged him.
Miles never lost his temper.
When an uncle tried to embarrass him by discussing logistics and corporate management, Miles calmly gave such a detailed answer that the man quickly changed the subject.
Still, Lois continued treating him like a servant, even handing him barbecue tongs and ordering him to work the grill.
Miles simply smiled and cooked.
Later that afternoon, Lois called everyone together for an announcement.
“I’ve been promoted to regional operations manager at Sterling Corporation!”
The family erupted in applause.
Then Lois turned to Serena.
“Why don’t you congratulate me? At least one daughter in this family became successful.”
Serena felt tears rising.
Before she could speak, Miles stood.
He looked at Lois’s new business card and asked her a technical question about Sterling’s inventory operations.
Lois couldn’t answer.
Miles then made a phone call on speaker.
“Can you confirm whether Lois works as a regional operations manager at Sterling Corporation?”
The answer came immediately.
“No. We have nobody by that name in regional leadership.”
A relative checked Lois’s professional profile.
Her real position was listed clearly: data-entry clerk.
Lois panicked.
“He’s lying! Serena hired this shabby stranger to humiliate me!”
Serena froze.
Miles slowly stood and looked around the table.
“My name is Miles Sterling,” he said.
The patio went silent.
He was not a construction worker.
Miles was part of the Sterling family and had recently taken executive control of the corporation Lois had been pretending to manage.
Then he looked directly at her.
“And tomorrow morning, our compliance team will be reviewing why an employee has been publicly using a title she doesn’t hold.”
Lois went pale.
Serena’s mother suddenly became very polite.
Her father finally offered Miles a proper handshake.
Miles ignored both of them.
Instead, he turned to Serena.
“You didn’t embarrass this family today,” he said quietly. “They embarrassed themselves.”
Serena smiled for the first time all afternoon.
She had hired Miles to help her survive one barbecue.
She never expected him to become the first person at that table who truly stood beside her.
And when the afternoon ended, Miles refused her money.
Instead, he asked her one question.
“How about dinner next Friday? This time, no pretending.”
Serena said yes.
