For seven years, my mother-in-law Roslyn treated my nursing career like a bad financial decision.
She joked about my salary, my old Corolla, and the four years I had spent in college “just to empty bedpans.” I usually laughed it off because arguing never changed anything.
Then, during her sixty-eighth birthday dinner, her coffee cup slipped from her right hand.
Everyone laughed.
I didn’t.
Roslyn reached for a napkin and missed it. A moment later, she struggled to find a simple word and accidentally called her daughter by her son’s name.
I asked her to lift both arms.
Her right arm drifted downward.
“Call 911,” I told my husband.
Roslyn protested. Her family thought I was overreacting. But when one side of her smile stopped moving normally, I knew we couldn’t wait.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed she was having an ischemic stroke. Because we had recognized the symptoms quickly and knew almost exactly when they began, the medical team was able to start treatment immediately.
The next morning, Roslyn was awake and speaking much more clearly.
When I entered her room, she stared at me for several seconds.
“I remember telling you not to make a production out of my birthday,” she whispered.
“You were very convincing.”
She smiled.
Then her eyes filled with tears.
“The doctor said waiting another hour could have changed everything.”
I nodded.
Roslyn looked toward the chair beside her bed.
“Sit with me.”
For once, there was no joke about my salary or my car.
Three months later, Roslyn was recovering well and attending physical therapy. At Thanksgiving dinner, someone asked whether I was still working at County Memorial.
Before I could answer, Roslyn interrupted.
“My daughter-in-law is a nurse,” she said proudly. “And if she ever tells you something is wrong, you listen.”
Then she looked through the window toward my old Corolla.
“You should still replace that car, though.”
This time, we both laughed.
