The Name Around His Neck

Rowan Mercer only stopped because the seven-year-old girl looked terrified.

While hundreds of travelers rushed through the airport, Sienna Vale stood alone near Gate C18, clutching a purple backpack and searching every passing face for her mother.

Rowan was traveling with his ten-year-old son, Callum. Instead of taking the girl anywhere, he contacted airport security and stayed beside her until help arrived.

Minutes later, a woman came running down the concourse.

“Sienna!”

The girl flew into her arms.

Rowan soon learned the woman was Maris Vale, billionaire founder of Asteron Systems. But her wealth meant nothing in that moment. She was simply a mother trembling with relief.

“You stayed with my daughter,” Maris said. “How can I repay you?”

“You can’t,” Rowan replied gently. “Buy her an ice cream.”

Maris smiled through her tears.

Then Callum tugged playfully at his father’s shirt, accidentally pulling a chain from beneath Rowan’s collar.

Two old military tags appeared.

Maris suddenly went pale.

One belonged to Rowan.

The other carried a different name:

ADRIAN VALE.

“Where did you get that?” she whispered.

Rowan looked down at the tag.

“Adrian served with me overseas.”

Maris could barely speak.

“He was my brother.”

Nine years earlier, Adrian had died during their deployment. Rowan explained that Adrian had saved his life during their final mission. Before dying, he had asked Rowan to keep the tag and remember one thing: if he ever met someone from the Vale family, tell them Adrian had been thinking about home until the end.

Maris covered her mouth.

For years, her family had received only an official report and a box of belongings. They never knew Adrian’s final words.

Rowan had searched for them afterward, but the family had moved and he eventually stopped trying.

“And today,” Maris whispered, looking at Sienna, “you saved someone from our family too.”

Rowan shook his head.

“I just stayed with a scared little girl.”

Maris hugged him before he could protest.

Months later, Rowan received an invitation from the Vale family. They finally heard the story of Adrian’s last hours, while Rowan learned about the man his friend had been before the uniform.

Maris offered Rowan money again.

He refused again.

So instead, she created a scholarship in Adrian’s name for children of fallen service members.

And every year afterward, Rowan, Callum, Maris and Sienna met on Adrian’s birthday.

A chance encounter at an airport had returned a lost child to her mother.

But the name hanging from Rowan’s neck had returned something else to an entire family:

the goodbye they had waited nine years to hear.
