Pat Sajak Opens Up About the Terrifying Health Emergency That Led to Surgery
Pat Sajak once faced a frightening medical emergency that left him wondering whether he was experiencing his final moments.
The longtime Wheel of Fortune host spoke openly about the ordeal after undergoing emergency surgery for a blocked intestine. What began as an ordinary day suddenly turned serious when Sajak was struck by intense abdominal pain.
He explained that he had been taking a morning walk with his daughter when the discomfort appeared. Within a short time, the pain became so severe that he could barely function, forcing him to seek urgent medical help.
At the hospital, doctors tried several medications to control the pain, but initially, nothing seemed to provide enough relief. Eventually, Sajak was given a much stronger medication—and the experience that followed was something he would never forget.
As the drug began working, the television personality recalled feeling strangely detached from everything around him. He described seeing vivid colors and experiencing an overwhelming sense of calm. Although he could still hear his wife and daughter talking nearby, their voices seemed distant.
For a brief moment, Sajak genuinely wondered if he was dying.
The sensation was so unusual that he questioned whether he had somehow crossed into another world. Fortunately, the reality was far less dramatic. Looking back, Sajak was able to joke about the experience, admitting that the powerful medication had simply affected him more intensely than expected.
Doctors successfully treated the intestinal blockage, and Sajak said they found no serious underlying condition responsible for it. His recovery progressed well, allowing him to return to normal life and eventually get back to work.
True to his familiar sense of humor, Sajak also joked about his longtime Wheel of Fortune colleague Vanna White, who temporarily stepped into hosting duties during his absence. After discovering that she enjoyed being behind the podium, Sajak teasingly suggested he might need to watch his job carefully.
What had started as one of the most frightening experiences of his life ultimately ended with recovery, gratitude—and another story Sajak could tell with his trademark humor.
