Adrian Vale came home with an engagement ring in his pocket and found Marin standing beside a packed suitcase.

His mother, Celeste, was ordering her to leave.

She had secretly investigated Marin’s family and uncovered an old fraud case involving Marin’s mother. Although Elaine Parker had eventually been cleared, Celeste insisted the scandal proved Marin was unsuitable for her son.

Adrian was stunned.

“You had the woman I love investigated?”

“I was protecting you,” Celeste replied.

Marin wiped away her tears.

“I never lied to you. My mother was innocent. I simply refused to let someone else’s accusation define my life.”

Then Adrian noticed something strange in the documents. One highlighted name appeared repeatedly beside the missing money.

He recognized it.

The man responsible had once worked for a company owned by Celeste’s late husband.

Adrian hired an independent investigator. Within days, the truth emerged: Marin’s mother had been blamed for fraud committed by another employee, and Celeste had deliberately ignored evidence clearing her because she wanted Marin gone.

That evening, Adrian confronted his mother.

“You weren’t protecting me. You were controlling me.”

He asked Celeste to leave his house.

Then he found Marin at her sister’s apartment.

He placed the ring box on the table but didn’t open it.

“I came home planning to ask you to marry me,” he said. “But after what happened, I won’t ask until you know you’re free to say no.”

Marin stared at him for a long moment.

Then she opened the box herself.

“Yes,” she whispered. “But only because this time, the choice is mine.”

They married six months later.

Celeste was invited only after apologizing directly to Marin and her mother.

And Adrian learned that protecting love never means deciding for someone else.
