Emma had boarded the flight to San Francisco believing distance would finally put Tyler behind her.
Instead, after fainting during the overnight trip, she woke in Julian Mercer’s private cabin.
Then Julian told her Tyler would be waiting when they landed.
Emma thought he was bluffing until Julian showed her evidence. Tyler had paid someone with access to travel records to obtain her itinerary. He had also been trying to access her old accounts and track where she planned to live.
“And what about you saying I’d be your wife tomorrow?” Emma demanded.
Julian’s expression changed.
“That was badly said.”
“Badly?”
“I wanted you to understand that I have enough influence to keep him away from you. But marriage isn’t protection if you don’t choose it.”
Emma stared at him.
“Then I’m choosing no.”
Julian nodded.
“Then no it is.”
When the plane landed, Emma was escorted through a private exit and met by an attorney. Julian had already turned over the evidence he had collected.
Tyler was arrested days later after violating a restraining order and attempting to use Emma’s identity to access money she had hidden before leaving Boston.
Only afterward did Julian explain why he had been watching Emma’s gallery months earlier.
The struggling artist whose painting he had purchased was his younger sister. Emma had been the first gallery owner willing to display her work when nobody else would.
“I didn’t buy that painting to save your business,” Julian admitted. “I bought it because you gave someone I loved a chance.”
Emma moved to California permanently.
Within a year, she opened another small gallery.
Julian visited occasionally, but this time he never appeared without being invited.
Months later, when their friendship slowly became something more, Emma gave him one condition.
“No secrets. No deciding what’s best for me. No treating protection like ownership.”
Julian agreed.
And Emma finally understood the difference between a man who wanted to control her life and a man willing to stand beside her while she controlled it herself.
