On Christmas Eve, eight-months-pregnant Emma told Daniel to visit Rachel, his former girlfriend whose father was dying.
Secretly, she hoped he would recognize her pain and choose to stay.
Instead, he picked up his keys and left.
By morning, Emma was gone. Her letter explained that she could no longer remain with a husband who gave another woman the time and attention he withheld from his wife.
Beside it were anonymous messages suggesting Daniel and Rachel planned to be together after Christmas.
While rereading them, Daniel noticed a reference to a confidential business decision Rachel could not have known. Only his partner, Mark, had that information.
The truth soon emerged. Mark had fabricated the messages to destroy Daniel’s marriage and distract him from money being stolen from their company.
The police arrested Mark, and Rachel confirmed that she and Daniel had never had an affair.
Daniel found Emma at her sister’s house. He showed her the evidence but did not demand that she return.
Instead, he admitted that the messages had seemed believable because he had neglected her for months. He began therapy, stepped back from work and ended his private contact with Rachel.
Emma returned only after his actions proved that his promises were real.
Their daughter was born several weeks later with Daniel beside Emma.
The fabricated affair had almost destroyed their marriage, but Daniel finally understood the harder truth: his absence had made the lie possible.
