On Christmas Eve, Valerie Marino learned that her family had deliberately canceled the babysitter so she would watch four children for free. While everyone else attended a private party, she was expected to cook, clean, and sleep on an air mattress beside the washing machine.
They also assumed she would cancel the Prague vacation she had planned for months.
Valerie quietly left. The following morning, she told Dominic Vale, the powerful businessman whose multimillion-dollar accounts she managed.
Dominic accompanied her to the family celebration.
When Natalie opened the door, she immediately pushed the children’s bags toward Valerie.
“Perfect timing. We’re already late.”
Dominic stepped inside behind her.
“Ms. Marino isn’t here to work for you.”
The room fell silent when the family recognized the man feared throughout Chicago.
Dominic explained that Valerie had recently uncovered a fraud that saved his company millions. That morning, he had promoted her to chief financial officer.
“The woman you treat as disposable is the only person I trust with my entire business.”
Valerie handed the bags back to Natalie.
“I won’t babysit, make breakfast, or sleep in the laundry room. Tomorrow, I’m going to Prague.”
Her mother accused her of abandoning the family.
“Helping family is a choice,” Valerie replied. “Exploiting someone’s love is not.”
She spent Christmas in Prague and turned off her phone without guilt.
Over the following months, Dominic and Valerie grew closer. He never tried to rescue or control her. He simply respected the strength she had finally chosen to use for herself.
The next Christmas, Valerie woke in a warm home beside a man who valued her.
The only laundry room there was downstairs—and nobody expected her to sleep in it.
