At a dinner attended by Chicago’s wealthiest executives, Julian Cross publicly mocked his wife, Mara.
“She’s the only person here without a college degree,” he announced. “I invited her to make the evening more entertaining.”
Mara calmly stood and removed a blue folder from her handbag.
It contained evidence that the company Julian planned to purchase for $1.2 billion had falsified revenue, concealed enormous debts and used shell companies to inflate its value.
Mara had uncovered the truth by listening to hotel clerks, suppliers and maintenance workers—the people Julian’s executives considered unimportant.
One final document exposed an even deeper betrayal. Julian’s chief financial officer, who was sitting at the table, had accepted secret payments to push the fraudulent acquisition through.
The board canceled the deal and turned the evidence over to the authorities. The executive was dismissed and later charged with fraud.
Mara had saved Julian’s company and thousands of jobs.
Then she placed a second document in front of her husband.
It was a divorce petition.
“I may not have a degree,” she said, “but I know when a man has stopped respecting me.”
Julian apologized and begged her to stay. Mara walked away.
Several months later, she used her divorce settlement to establish a consulting firm that recruited talented people with practical experience, regardless of their education.
Julian kept his billion-dollar empire because of her.
But his cruel joke cost him the one woman intelligent enough to see what all his highly educated advisers had missed.
