Hannah returned to Bellamy’s Grill the following afternoon. Roman DeLuca was waiting in a rear booth with an old diner receipt and a twenty-dollar bill preserved beneath glass.
“You don’t remember me,” he said.
Fifteen years earlier, Roman had been a penniless waiter. When an arrogant customer stole his tip, every witness looked away except a young accounting student named Hannah.
After forcing the customer to return the money, she had told Roman:
“If you ever become powerful, promise me you’ll protect people who cannot protect themselves.”
Roman had kept that promise. After building his empire, he created an emergency fund for struggling employees and quietly paid tuition for their children.
But the incident with Eli proved that fear had found its way into his businesses.
Roman asked Hannah to audit every restaurant he owned. She agreed on one condition: nobody, including Roman, could hide information from her.
Within a week, Hannah discovered that the bodyguard had been stealing tips and intimidating servers for months. Several managers knew but had remained silent because they feared Roman’s reaction.
The guard was dismissed, every affected employee was repaid, and the managers were required to undergo an independent investigation. Roman also gave Eli a scholarship to finish college.
He later gathered the staff and revealed why Hannah’s courage mattered to him.
“She taught me that power isn’t making people afraid,” Roman said. “It is making sure they never need to be.”
Hannah accepted a permanent position overseeing employee protection, but insisted on remaining independent. She kept her old handbag, her gray sweaters, and her habit of telling Roman exactly when he was wrong.
Roman kept the framed twenty-dollar bill in his office.
It reminded him that his most important debt was not financial. It was the promise he had made to a stranger who refused to look away—and whom he had finally found fifteen years later.
