One of the most closely watched moments in the modern history of the British royal family unfolded at Westminster Abbey in March 2020.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended the Commonwealth Day service alongside Prince William and Kate Middleton. By then, Harry and Meghan had already announced their decision to step away from their roles as senior working royals, making the ceremony one of their final major engagements before beginning a very different chapter of their lives.
From the outside, the occasion had all the familiar elements of a royal event: formal clothing, carefully arranged seating, cameras and centuries-old tradition. But according to Harry’s later account, the atmosphere behind the polished appearance felt very different.
In his memoir Spare and in subsequent interviews, Harry described the day as emotionally uncomfortable. He recalled feeling an unmistakable distance between himself, Meghan and other members of the family.
Television footage from the service was examined closely in the days that followed. Commentators noted that the exchanges between the two couples appeared restrained. There were few obvious signs of warmth, and Kate and Meghan appeared to have very limited interaction as the family gathered inside the abbey.
For Harry and Meghan, another detail reportedly made the occasion especially difficult.
Plans surrounding the procession and seating had changed, leaving the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sitting with the congregation rather than taking part in the same way as some of the other senior royals. What might have seemed like a small ceremonial decision carried much greater emotional meaning at a time when relationships within the family were already under intense strain.
Harry later suggested that the experience reinforced his feeling that he and Meghan were increasingly separate from the institution they had once represented.
The tension was particularly striking because only a few years earlier, William, Kate, Harry and Meghan had frequently appeared together and were sometimes presented publicly as a new generation of royals working side by side.
By March 2020, that image had dramatically changed.
The Commonwealth Day service became one of the final occasions on which the four were seen together while Harry and Meghan were still transitioning out of their official royal roles.
Soon afterward, the couple left the United Kingdom and began building a life outside the system of full-time royal duties.
Looking back, that morning at Westminster Abbey was about far more than ceremony. For Harry and Meghan, it represented the closing of one chapter—one filled with public expectations, family tension and difficult decisions—and the beginning of another.
