“Dad, Don’t You Love Us Anymore?” — The Question That Stopped His Wedding

The officiant had just asked Daniel Carter and Claire Bennett to join hands when the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

Every head turned.

Ten-year-old Ethan stood in the doorway holding the hand of his seven-year-old sister, Sophie.

Both children were crying.

Daniel’s face went white.

“Ethan? Sophie?”

The boy looked directly at his father.

“Dad… do you have a new family now?”

A murmur passed through the room.

Sophie wiped her cheeks with both hands.

“Are you not going to love us anymore?”

Daniel released Claire’s hand and hurried toward them.

Behind him, Claire stared in disbelief.

“You said your children weren’t coming…”

“I thought they weren’t.”

Daniel dropped to his knees in front of them.

“Who told you I didn’t want to see you anymore?”

Ethan sniffed, then lifted his arm and pointed toward the third row.

Daniel slowly turned.

His mother, Margaret, abruptly stood.

The truth hit him before she said a word.

“Mom?”

Margaret glanced around at the guests.

“Daniel, not here.”

“Did you tell my children I didn’t want them at my wedding?”

“I was trying to protect today.”

“From my children?”

Margaret’s lips tightened.

Ever since Daniel’s divorce from Laura three years earlier, his mother had insisted he needed a “clean beginning.” When he became engaged to Claire, whose family was wealthy and socially prominent, Margaret became obsessed with making the wedding perfect.

But Daniel had been clear.

Ethan and Sophie were not part of his past.

They were his children.

Claire had even bought Sophie a pale blue dress and asked Ethan to carry the rings.

Two days earlier, however, Margaret had called Daniel saying Laura refused to let the children attend.

“She says it will confuse them,” Margaret had claimed.

Daniel had been devastated, but he didn’t want to start another argument with his ex-wife on the eve of his wedding.

What he didn’t know was that Margaret had visited the children that same afternoon.

She told them their father wanted to begin a new life.

Without them.

Sophie started sobbing again.

“Grandma said Claire would have babies and you wouldn’t need us.”

Daniel closed his eyes for a second.

Claire made a broken sound behind him.

Margaret rushed forward.

“I never said it like that.”

“Yes, you did,” Ethan said.

For a ten-year-old, his voice was remarkably steady.

“You said Dad told you we shouldn’t come because people would ask who we were.”

The room went completely silent.

Daniel stood.

“Why?”

Margaret looked toward Claire’s parents and lowered her voice.

“Look around you. These people are important. I wanted one day without Laura, custody arguments and reminders of your failed marriage.”

Daniel stared at her.

“My children are reminders of a failed marriage?”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“It is exactly what you meant.”

At that moment Laura appeared at the doorway.

She looked furious.

“I brought them because Claire emailed me twenty minutes ago.”

Claire blinked.

“I emailed you because I wanted to know whether Sophie was feeling better. Margaret told us she was sick.”

Laura shook her head.

“No one was sick. Margaret told me Daniel changed his mind and didn’t want the children here.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

She had lied to everyone.

Margaret tried to explain that she only wanted him to have the elegant wedding he deserved.

Daniel interrupted her.

“The wedding I deserve has my children in it.”

He turned to security.

“Please escort my mother out.”

Margaret stared at him.

“You would throw your own mother out?”

“You threw my children out before they even arrived.”

She left without another word.

Daniel returned to Ethan and Sophie.

“I need you both to hear me carefully.”

He knelt again.

“Claire is becoming part of our family. She is not replacing you. No baby, no marriage and no person on earth could make you stop being my children.”

Sophie looked at Claire.

“Really?”

Claire walked over, still holding her bouquet.

Then she knelt beside Daniel.
