Nora Bennett had only one unusual rule at her new housekeeping job: never enter the east corridor on the third floor.
For three weeks, she obeyed.
Declan Hayes was one of Boston’s most feared men, and Nora had no interest in learning whether the rumors surrounding him were true. She needed the generous paycheck to rebuild her life and help her younger brother finish college.
Then, during a violent winter storm, Nora heard something crash behind the forbidden door.
She should have walked away.
Instead, she opened it.
Declan was sitting on the floor of a hidden medical room, badly wounded, a gun trembling in his hand.

He had expected to find a dead man.
Instead, Declan had already contacted the few people he still trusted.
By sunrise, Thomas was gone from the estate, and his betrayal was exposed.
Nora expected to be fired for breaking the mansion’s most important rule.
Instead, Declan handed her an envelope containing enough money to clear her debts.
“You opened a door nobody was supposed to open,” he said.
Nora swallowed. “So I’m fired?”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“No. You’re the reason I’m still alive.”
Nora had entered the Hayes mansion believing survival meant keeping her head down and asking no questions.
She left that forbidden room understanding something different:
Sometimes the rule that changes your life is the one you finally have the courage to break.
