The Mafia Boss Dared Her to Call Him Old Again—So She Did

Nadia Cole accepted the invitation to Adrian Vale’s mansion for one reason she never revealed.

Fourteen years earlier, her father had died during a violent conflict involving men connected to the Vale organization. When Adrian’s sister asked Nadia, a grief counselor, to help him recover from the death of his wife, Nadia saw a chance to finally understand the man behind the name she had hated for years.

Their first meeting was a disaster.

“You’re younger than I expected,” Adrian said from behind his desk.

“You’re ruder than I expected,” Nadia replied.

For the first time in months, Adrian almost smiled.

That was how it began.

Over the following weeks, Nadia discovered that Chicago’s feared fifty-two-year-old businessman was not the emotionless monster people described. He was exhausted, lonely, and still blaming himself for the attack that had killed his wife, Corinne.

Adrian, meanwhile, realized Nadia was the only person in his house who never feared him.

Their conversations became longer. Their arguments became personal. And somewhere between grief, stubbornness, and late-night coffee, affection grew where neither of them wanted it.

Then Nadia found an old file mentioning her father.

The truth was devastating—but different from what she had believed.

Adrian had not ordered Daniel Cole’s death. In fact, Daniel had secretly helped Adrian expose a dangerous member of his own organization. When Daniel was targeted afterward, Adrian had tried to protect him and failed.

“You knew my father?” Nadia demanded.

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“I was afraid you’d leave.”

The confession started their worst argument.

Nadia accused him of deciding what truths she could handle. Adrian accused her of entering his home while secretly investigating him.

When he blocked her path to the elevator, Nadia snapped.

“You’re just a tired old man hiding behind a terrifying title.”

Adrian froze.

“Say it again.”

She should have apologized.

Instead, Nadia smiled.

“Old man.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Again.”

“Old man.”

For several seconds they simply stared at each other.

Then Adrian laughed.

Not the cold, controlled sound his employees knew.

A genuine laugh.

Nadia started laughing too, until the anger between them finally broke.

Adrian stepped away from the elevator.

“You’re free to go,” he said quietly. “You always were.”

Nadia looked at the open doors.

Then she pressed the button to close them.

Months later, Adrian publicly separated himself from the criminal connections that had defined his family for decades and turned his businesses legitimate. Nadia never excused his past, and Adrian never asked her to.

They simply chose to build something better than what had come before.

And whenever Adrian became too controlling, Nadia discovered one remarkably effective way to bring him back to earth.

She smiled and said, “Careful, old man.”
