Full custody belonged to her.
Graham had requested no visitation.
When his attorney finished explaining everything, Claire asked only one question.
“Has he asked about his son?”
The man’s hesitation gave her the answer.
Two days later, Claire was discharged. She refused the extra money Graham offered, used her own savings, and took Owen to stay with her sister in another city.
She left no forwarding address.
Graham, meanwhile, believed he had finally gotten the life he wanted with Vanessa.
Then his grandfather learned what had happened.
“You abandoned your wife while she was bleeding to death?”
Graham tried to defend himself.
His grandfather dropped Claire’s medical report onto the desk.
Emergency surgery.
Multiple blood transfusions.
Massive blood loss.
Doctors had come frighteningly close to losing her.
For the first time, Graham understood that when Claire had whispered, “I’m hemorrhaging,” she had not been asking for attention.
She had been asking her husband to come because she thought she might die.
Three days after Owen’s birth, Graham rushed to the hospital.
Claire’s room was empty.
The bed had been remade.
The bassinet was gone.
Only one envelope remained on the table.
Inside was Claire’s wedding ring and a note.
“You asked me to take our son and disappear. This time, I decided to give you exactly what you wanted.”
Graham read it twice.
Then his knees gave out.
He collapsed beside the empty hospital bed, finally realizing that there was no one left in the room to forgive him.
Months later, he managed to find Claire.
Owen was thriving.
Claire allowed Graham the chance to know his son, but she refused to rebuild their marriage.
“I can forgive you for never loving me,” she told him. “I can’t forget that when your son and I needed you most, you chose someone else.”
Graham lost his family because of a decision he made in minutes.
Claire built a new life with Owen—one where neither of them would ever have to beg someone to stay.
