Kevin Costner’s Bold Career Gamble Comes Amid a Painful Hollywood Loss

Hollywood was left mourning the death of respected talent manager Peter Meyer, a longtime industry figure who worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Tom Hanks and Kevin Costner.

Meyer died at the age of 68 following a five-year battle with sarcoma. According to his family, he spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones after facing the illness with extraordinary determination.

Throughout his long career, Meyer earned a reputation for loyalty, professionalism, and an ability to guide performers through the unpredictable world of Hollywood.

Before launching his own company, Meyer Management, in 1989, he spent more than a decade working as a talent agent at William Morris. Over the years, he represented actors and other entertainment professionals while building relationships that extended far beyond ordinary business partnerships.

A memorial service honoring Meyer’s life and career was planned at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Santa Monica. Friends, relatives, colleagues, and former clients remembered not only the manager behind major careers but also the man whose influence quietly shaped countless professional journeys.

One of Meyer’s most famous clients, Kevin Costner, was meanwhile entering one of the most ambitious periods of his own career.

Costner devoted enormous personal and financial resources to Horizon, his sweeping Western project. The actor and filmmaker had dreamed of bringing the story to the screen for years and was willing to accept risks that many established Hollywood stars would avoid.

Reports indicated that Costner mortgaged a waterfront property in Santa Barbara and personally committed tens of millions of dollars to the project, whose overall production costs were substantial.

For Costner, however, Horizon was never simply another movie.

He viewed the project as a story worth fighting for and potentially one of the defining works of his filmmaking career.

The enormous commitment came during a difficult period in his personal life, as Costner was also navigating his divorce from Christine Baumgartner. Yet the challenges apparently did little to weaken his determination to complete the Western saga.

Costner also made it clear that such financial risks would not become a habit. He indicated that after completing the planned Horizon films, he did not intend to personally finance another movie on such a scale.

That decision makes the project even more significant.

At a stage of life when many actors might choose safer roles, Kevin Costner instead placed his reputation, money, and creative vision behind a project he deeply believed in.

And as Hollywood remembers Peter Meyer—a man who spent decades helping artists build lasting careers—Costner’s determination to pursue his own creative legacy serves as a fitting reminder of how much courage can exist behind the movies audiences eventually see on screen.
